Front Strut Installation 850 1993

I am planning on replacing my front struts soon, and had a question for anyone that has done this procedure themselves. The Haynes manual says that three different specialized Volvo tools are required. One to remove the strut mounting nut, one to hold the piston rod, and one to remove the retaining nut. Are these specialized tools really required, or will standard tools work as suitable substitutes for these tools? We just did the struts on my sons Nissan, and had no problem with normal tools, and based on the manual, this doesn't look much different.
