Ball seat for M56 tranny 99 & previous... how to reinstall? C70 1999

Howdy folks, I've got a '99 C70 HPT with the 5 speed, and I put in a custom shorter shift linkage. Problem is, on the '99 and previous (they changed the design very much for the better in '00, which is why that IPD short shift kit only works on '00 & '01 V70 & C70) manual transmissions, the hard plastic white shift ball seat doesn't want to go back down into its hole. I've got it down there most of the way, but the two clips won't go over their metal tabs on the top of the housing. Any suggestions? I already broke one when I removed the old linkage, I'm afraid to snap of more tabs as the damn part was over $50!!!
