AC compressor 850

My AC system has NO freon, I guess. Or at least not enough to make the compressor/clutch engage. When last charged, the WHOLE system was working great. That was in February 2002.

If the clutch will not engage, how (I'm self servicing) will the new freon get sucked from the can?

Is there a way to force the clutch to come on for this instance? Is there a switch that trips off when every drop of freon is gone from the system?

Thanks.
