Mistery Sensor where is it?

I get A/C and REC lights blinking after ignition turn on. Check the code, Exterior Temp Sensor Shorted to 12V or Open", could it be that it really doesn't exist. The picture in the Haynes manual shows the general location of the sensor (right side vent on the firewall) but it's not there.

A/C works 1/2 of the time, it seems to quite when it is too hot, but when it works is very confortable. I had it charged last year and they didn't detect any leak, or bad evaporater.

I also bypassed the infamous temp switch which used to equip the earlier A/C units, but to no avail.

Basically I never know when I'm going to have A/C when I get in the car, it is that unpredictable.

1994 850 Turbo Wagon, 80K miles. Otherwise flawless.

thanks
rui

p.s. BTW, A/C works flawlessly in the winter......
