chirping from front left wheel, also a lot of brake pedal movement 850 1996

I'm borrowing a friend's 96 850 (I own 240s) and noticed a high pitched chiping from the front left wheel at lower speeds. It goes away when the brake pedal is depressed. Wheel bearings? Also, there seems to be way too much brake pedal movement before the brakes actually engage--pedal goes half-way to the floor. Don't know if it's related. The car has 63K miles and has had regular maintenance. Thanks for any input.
