I posted a little while ago about replacing the compressor and I got a very good reply about how I should keep the system open for the minimal amount of time and keep everything as clean as possible. Is the reason for having the system open for a minimal amount of time because of the receiver/dryer? The reason I wanted to know is that I want to replace both my compressor and evaporator (it has a leak also), and was wondering if I could leave the system open for a longer time if I planned on replacing the receiver/dryer? Here is my plan of attack:
1. Have the system professionally evacuated.
2. Drive the car home and replace the compressor and evaporator.
3. Drive the car back to the shop and have THEM replace the receiver/dryer and professionally recharge the system with the correct oil and 134a.

Does this sound OK? Can I drive the car with no 134a and oil in the compressor and not damage it as long as it doesn’t turn on (seems like it would be OK)? Is there anything else I should replace while I’m in the dash (I’ve heard something about a heater core gasket) or in the A/C system while it’s completely apart? What are the special tools needed to replace the evaporator and can I rent them somewhere? Any advise on replacing both would be greatly appreciated. And if anyone is in the Washington DC/Maryland area and would like to help/watch let me know!
