The Famed Heater Core... C70

How can I prove that my heater core is in trouble
or kaput or if i'm just sensitive? What happen was about 8 weeks
ago I went out early and turned on the defrost and it looked like
a smoke bomb was going off in the car[never happened again].
I thought it may be the stereo shorting out or something but found it was not. I was going up a mountain so i thought it may just be condensation coming from the vents.

Facts :

- Getting smell[which I think is coolant] when I turn on the defrost.

- Not getting smell when using the heat only.

- Not getting the smell when using the A/C only.

- A/C works fine and no loss of coolant from reservoir.

- Get steam on front glass when invoke front defrost but evaporates
in a short time. I hear coolant steam on your glass is an indicator
but will this coolant steam stay on the glass or evaportate after
a few minutes? Mine clears up.

Are there any tricks to prove i have a defective heater core?

Is it a hint that this only happens when i invoke the defrost?

Warranty is getting close to the end so i want to troubleshoot
and go from there.

Thanks,

rd
