OBDII code reader from Auto Zone 850

Are these worth buying? I have no experience with these or other readers. There is a company that will check out a car you are planning to buy. When I sold the Avalon, the buyer hired this company. Pretty cool relly. They come out in a van with all the needed equipment and check it out. He had a OBDII reader that was about the size of a book. Worked quite well. Don't know what they cost. Thanks for any input. Has anyone created a hack to reset the Check Engine light?
