Probably not a CV joint. Sounds more like a wheel hub bearing. Regarding the steering stops, I don't recall if they're on the front or back of the control arms. If they're on the rear of the arms, you'd hear it groan on the right in a right hand turn when full-lock. Left for left.

If it's the hub bearing, the hub and bearing assembly are replaced as a unit. You can surf around the shops that advertise here for prices. I'd guess about $120. Replacing it can be a DIY job but probably not for the faint of wrench.
