I have a 1994 940 Turbo and so far have done all of the maintenance/repairs myself. I have quite a few factory tools and all of the Green Books.
My young co-worker jumped on the 2.9% 1999 S-80 deal.
So here are some questions. I have read some of the S-80 forum, but have not read it in its entirety because of a slow internet connection. Of course, I miss something like Steve Ringlee's 700/900 FAQ.
I'd appreciate any info on the following questions. If I have missed anything, please speak up.
- VIRA is out of the question. Who, if anybody, makes the best repair manual for the S-80?
- Is the engine an inteference or non-interference engine?
- If a manual or website exists that explains the procedure, how feasible is it to change the timing belt out at home? I am familiar with the B-230 change out. Any special tools or techniques needed?
- Sounds like there are transmission and throttle valve/body? reliability issues with the 1999's. What are the problems, what mileage do they tend to crop up, etc.? Are there any warranties or "secret" warranties out there?
- How easy is it to do routine maintenance on these cars? I'm thinking about coolant drain and refill, oil change, sparkplugs, etc. Is there a way to disable the ignition when you change the oil so that you can prime the pump before the engine fires up and the turbo spins up? I do this all the time when I change the oil on my 940.
- Any other problems that he should be aware of.
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for your answers.
