Not Volvo but similar design 850 1995

Ok, not Volvo but similar design in that the water pump is driven by the t-belt. Volvo question at the bottom.

My mother's Chrysler LHS, a FWD V6, just stopped on her and would crank but not start. All the coolant was gone too.

Turns out, the water pump locked up and the timing belt melted against it as the engine kept running. I have a neat trophy. A pump with a section of melted t-belt stuck to it.

Apparantly, the LHS isn't an interference engine. $875 for belt, pump, tensioner, labor and sundries.

The Volvo question. Does coolant choice have any impact on bearing or seal lubrication? Could not using Volvo coolant lead to pump failure in the 850.

In her case, the pump and impeller looked new after 80k miles. It's locked up tight. My father uses whatever is cheapest when it comes to coolant, oil etc.

Thanks,
