IPD ECU upgrade without the exhaust! S70 1999

I just installed the iPd/TME sport exhaust on my car after having run my car with the ECU upgrade only, for the last 6 months or so.

I was told by the president of TME that I would be crazy if I did not use the sport exhaust and/or move up to a heavier grade of oil. Switching to 5W-50 or 10W-40 was no problem for me but I did get pretty upset (after I had already installed the upgraded ECU) thinking that I may have to spend extra $$$ for an exhaust system that may be too loud for my taste.

iPd advised me that "I did not really have to" get the exhaust but I should not spend more than 15 seconds at wide-out throttle conditions. And if I did give it a kick in the pants, I should let it "cool off" for about a minute or so before I do that again.

So, anyway, I did follow these precautions and never had a problem in this short span.

Last week, I did order and installed the exhaust and I am glad I did. It is not loud at all. It has a very light (and I emphasize "light") booming sound much like a BMW 3-series sounds. And that is only at the very low RPMs. At high RPMs, the car does not sound any differently...Is it any faster? They claim I should have an additional 12 HP and that much torque but I cannot really tell. Well, it kind of feels a little faster at the top end but that could be my imagination.

What has changed is that the car did have some kind of pulsation when I was accelerating hard (before the exhaust) from 3rd or 4th gear, I was attributing that to either the configuration of the upgraded software or more exhaust wanting to come out the stock tailpipe. After the installation of the exhaust this pulsations has disappeared. So, it must have been that the stock system was way too restrictive.

So, if I had to do this all over again, I think it is a good idea to do both at the same time but not imperative. I think that you will enjoy your car more if you also have the sport exhaust installed, it will accelerate much smoother plus you will not have to worry about any potential damage to either the turbocharger and/or the catalytic converter.
