I had something like that. Spent a few hours tearing down the dash.

Turned out to be a pine needle in the blower!

Stupid pine needle. How it got there is another mystery. I have heard similar stories involving parts of the ductworks... '70s and '80s Mercedes are horrible for this.

Anyhow, chin up - could be something really simple.
