Best engine choice for an 850 850

I hear you. Mine is a 96 N/A, and an automatic on top of that. You really have to gun it sometimes when highway traffic is fast, and one needs to merge immediately. A K&N air filter has helped a bit, but because I refuse to upgrade to a turbo until my engine finally dies--a long way from that, I might add--I do plan on upgrading the ECU and exhaust to give it a little more spirit. Overall, I am happy with my 850 and have adjusted to its quirks thru performance mods and understanding.
