Starting problems 850 1996

I have a ’96 850 with 78,000 miles which is developing this hard start problem. Seems to be fine most of the time, but sometimes if we drive it then stop at a store and get back in it will not start. It seems to not get a spark, just cranking and cranking. We were getting it to start by putting the gas to the floor but that’s not working as well any more (like today). Anyone have any idea where I should start? I don’t even know what to tell a mechanic to get him started because I know it won’t do the same thing for him!
