A2 code 212 - oxygen sensor 850 1993

I got a 212 on A2 which signified oxygen sensor. I could even smell exhaust. So, I installed a new one a few days ago, and the check engine light came back on (after I had turned it off). Again, the 212 code on A2 came up. I double checked my connection and the sensor and it seemed OK. Any clues as to what else I should do? thanks
