How to replace rear shocks?

I've been there and the information is very helpful. I feel like I can do this job. However, I would like a little more details. For example, what do I need to do in order to compress the shock after I jack up the rear? Do I compress the shock or the spring or both? Would a new Koni rear shock fit right in or do I need to perform any adjustments? Questions, questions. I would use as much description as possible. Thanks a lot!
