ABS and Traction Idiot Light 850 1997

My wife's 96 850 Turbo needed a new ABS module(approx. $450) and now my 97 850 ABS and Traction Idiots lights are coming on intermittently. What's up with the design of the ABS system? I'm pissed off that VOLVO's gonna get me for $900 dollars worth of electronics modules. Is there anyway to verify that it is the actual brake module without using a special maintenance computer?. I work at an electronics manufacturer. Can I open up the module and check for the faulty component or cold solder joint? What is the main failure mode in this system. Electronics shouldn't just fail like this. Tires wear out...electronics don't unless it is a lousy design.

Thanks,

AndyC
