'95 850 Transmission Won't shift out of 1st 850 1995

My wife's '95 850 has a problem that I believe could be the PNP switch. At times when starting out it will not shift out of first. Moving the shift lever to neutral or to first and back out will clear it and it shifts fine thereafter. I don't believe it happens when it is warmed up and it does not do it all the time. She said today it had to be moved to 1st twice before it cleared. The shop (independent mecahnics who are generally quite good with Volvo's) told me the transmission was going and "better have another one on hand" to switch it out. They also failed to correctly diagnose my od solenoid problem on my '85 740 so transmissions are not their forte. I have not noticed flashing arrows but I'll get my wife to check next time it happens. Any thoughts?
