Electronic Throttle Control Sys. V70-XC70 2000

I apparently have a faulty Electronic Control System in my 2000-V70XC. This is according to the dealer and the ECM codes. I am wondering if anyone can tell me if this fault is normal after 80K miles and if there are other conditions that can cause the same fault code. I am not happy about the cost of ths repair, $800, and feel this component should last the life of the car. Has anyone had the same experience or know where good information about this system can be found? The electronics has taken the DIY out of everything.
