blower for air and heat not blowing 850 1995

I am hoping this is a relatively simple fix that I can do myself. Here's what I have: the compressor for the A/C is working, heat is working, the blower is not. Sometimes it cuts on, but it will cut out just on w whim. It's been happening but I just put up with it. (My son punched the dash between the controls and it came back on once!) I an assuming it is a short. I'm a single mom, but am fairly mechanical, but dont know where to look or start. Has anyone else fooled with this or know where and how to start? I figure I will give it a shot before taking it to the shop....which is 45 miles away and costly.
