I didn't claim that they ALL break the door, just that they MAY break ... or drill through ... the door. In fact that procedure has been described here.
I realize that most people who work on Volvos are trying to do a good job. OTOH, they're human, they have bad days, and, just like me, they have an error rate.
The 850-70 is a fairly complex machine compared to a 240. Sometimes it seems it might as well be a bunch of guys in standing around in Roswell, New Mexico scratching their heads trying to figure out how to fix a flying saucer.
There are 5 local shops: a Volvo dealer, 1 indy Volvo, 1 indy Volvo/SAAB, 1 Volvo performance shop and a mostly Porsche racing shop that I use for suspension and tires that I may take my car to depending on the problem. NO ONE has been perfect. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten the car back and either the problem wasn't fixed, or there's a new problem after he original problem was fixed, or the original problem is actually worse.
The lowest error rate has been the Porsche shop the highest error has been my local Volvo dealer, with whom I'd have to check everything to make sure it's been done or done right, which eliminates one of the major reasons that I contract with a shop to have routine maintainance performed (to save time). The problem wih my dealer is that he's BIG and while they have a number of good and experienced techs, the also have a number of not-so-good and/or inexperienced techs. So the result of any encounter is random depending on who's working on the car. I've seen them fail to change the oil at an oil change, put directional tires on the car backwards, fail to change filters, mis-balance wheels, charge for an ATF change (the car's a manual) break things when repairing other things and I don't know how many times they've forgotten to reset the service reminder light. Pretty simple stuff to do correctly. Yes, I've identified good techs, and even requested them but the dealer's so big and busy that they may not be available so that strategy hasn't worked, either.
In frustration,
