What is this sensor used for? A/C I think? 850

I opened the hood on my car this morning, to show something to a neighbor who just purchased a 1996 850. On my car, I noticed that this sensor was snapped off on my 1995 850 GLT.

Anyone know what it is used for, and if I can replace just the sensor, and not the whole assembly that it is connected to? It's under the diag. A/B plug cluster, and looks like it is connected to the A/C somehow. Picture 3 shows it best.

Any info is greatly appreciated.
