Suspension and ABS 850 1995

There are a few ABS posts showing up so I thought I'd throw this out. While my '95 855t's (87,000mi) ABS works properly, it is easily fooled when the wheels are not in contact with the road. Imagine that.

Got my attention the other day when I had to stop in a hurry on a rippled surface. The type of "stutter bumps" that develop in asphalt near intersections as tires are constantly pushing against the surface. About an inch or so high and 6 to 12 inches apart.

Anyway, it doesn't seem the front suspension reacts fast enough to keep the wheel on the road over this type surface and as soon as the wheel loses contact under braking, it locks. ABS is triggered (to both front or all wheels?) and the cycle repeats. I came really close to rear ending the car in front.

Does the Volvo system modulate pressure to only the locked wheel or front / rear or all at once?

If the suspension were better able to control the wheel (and all the associated components adding to unsprung weight) it wouldn't have been an issue. Lower initial high speed compression and rebound damping? I'll be looking to replace suspension next year sometime so I'm starting to look at options. Koni's? Ohlin's?

Regards,
