How Long Will It Last... V70-XC70 1998

I've been following the BB for about three years now. About every week, there is someone who needs to know if they can "push" the interval on their timing belt. How long will it last? How long is a piece of rope???

Volvo recommends 70k because it is a safe margin. After all, it is just a "rubber" belt. And if it does let go, you crash the 5 pistons into the 20 valves and the top end of the engine must be removed and repaired. $3000-$4000 is a fair estimate.

Should run ya' around $250-$300 to have it replaced. Might as well replace the serpentine belt while your at it. If you do it yourself, we're talking under a $100 for the 2 belts (well under if you shop around)

The Haynes manual has real good instructions on how to replace it. Also check out VolvoSpeed.com, under the repairs & Maintainence section (Bay 13) Nice step-by-step instructions there as well.
