Prospective 855R Purchase 850 1996

I'm in the market for another vehicle. I would like another Volvo and have found a '96 855 R model with 58K miles on a non-Volvo dealers lot. I was able to drive it and look it over. The service book and a few receipts were in the glove box. They showed:
- Rear main seal replaced by dealer in 1999
- Altenator replaced this year (indie Volvo mechanic)
- A few others with check engine codes, noisy power steering

The service book looked good (all done by dealer) up until about 40K miles, probably when the warranty ran out. The garage that replaced the altenator is where I go to have my 740 worked on and I will take it to him for a pre-inspection. Anything specific to look for? I did notice the tranny fluid was dirty and needs flushed. Not sure if an A/C evaporator replacement was done but the climate control was working when I drove the car. Price, $14.9k, Carfax shows one owner, no evidence of body damage (I looked under car, hood) except the bottom of the front airdam has been touched up. It seems so low to the ground.
This won't replace my existing 740GL but a Toyota wagon I have (my spouse is leaning towards an SUV). I want something with some get up and go, better MPG than an SUV/pickup and will last without too much garage time.

Comments on longivity, dependability of 850? I've been reading old forums and am a bit torn on this as the 850 seems more "sensitive" than some of the RWDs. Don't want to start a war over this though. :)
Thanks, Tim
