Volvo 850 Wagon 850 1995

I'm a NYC driver which means we only use our car on weekends, and our '95 950wagon has only 35,000 miles on it. For the past 3 years the car has been completely unreliable. We've been told it's because we didn't close the glove box, or forgot to switch off the power steering when we turned off the engine. The clock never keeps time if the engine is off--it stops keeping time in the time it takes me to buy groceries. We became maniacal about switching everything off. It still happens, as often as in a three day span. We've completely overhauled the electric seats. This past week our mechanic says we need a new radio. Do you think this is yet another stab in the dark, or can a bad radio short out the whole system to the degree that this one has.

Any ideas for this mechanically challenged mother of two who relies on her 850 wagon for weekend escapse and grocery shopping?
