Driver's seat backrest won't move forward 850 1994

I have had problems with the driver's side power seat lately, today it completely failed! The power seats move up/down/forward, but the backrest will not adjust. My husband adjusts it way back and now I can't get it to move forward at all. To top it off, I thought if I moved it all the way back maybe it would "catch" (gears or whatever moves it). Now I have a seat that is almost reclined to the back seat and I can't it get back up! Has anyone ever had this problem and if it is stripped gears, how much would something like that cost to repair? There is power to the seat, the control makes noise (kind of sickly noise coming from the gears/power under the seat!)so that makes me think it is sripped gears.
