O2 Sensor 850 1995

I'm told by my Volvo mech. that I need to replace a O2 sensor and it will cost $650.00. I looked at Bay 13 and it looks simple enough but my question is where is the little box to look the codes up with and do I need any special tools to read the codes. Are there any helpful hints before I try this. I'm looking at try to burn off the residue and cleaning it good before replacing. My Volvo dealership has changed hands and I'm not 100% confident in the new techs, I just want to verify the problem. Any manuals that would help?
