Why V70GLT is quieter than V70 base model

Hi,

I am shopping around for a V70. This weekend, I test drove 4 volvo V70s. 2 of them are GLT, and others are base models. All of them are made in 1999, with 35-45k miles on it. I found both base model cars were very noisy. When I started them, they were quiet, after driving a while, when stopping at the traffice light, engines were at idle, but the noise was very loud, even louder than my 240 '90. Then I drove GLT, the engines were very quiet, both cars. Why? I know V70 is front wheel drive, this may explain why it was louder than RW cars. But, why GLT is so quiet? BTW, front wheel drive cars made by other companies are not that loud as these V70 base models, so is it a persistent problem for V70 base model?

Thanks for your answers!
