Here are some comments from my experience many years ago:
Note: You will have to cut holes in the spoiler.
The good news: Volvo recommends actually recommends removing the spoiler - but
this is not necessary if you are willing to spend a little more time. Removing
the spoiler would have meant drilling-out and reinstalling about 8 rivets from the wheel fenders (too hard for me even though the replacement rivets are included in the kit). Fortunately the hole cutout pattern is scribed on the back side of the spoiler. To make the cut, I started by punching small holes with a scratch awl (ice pick) while watching with a mirror where the holes were on the back of the spoiler. I cut out a small hole pattern (about 1 in diam) approx centered in the scribed pattern then finished off this small hole with a sharp utility knife. I gradually enlarged the hole with the utility knife, while watching with the mirror and feeling with fingers to make sure I wasn't overcutting beyond the scribe marks on the back. The hole doesn't have to be perfect, but should be smooth (use a round file). A cover ring gasket is supplied in the kit to make the job look finished.
The bad news: Cutting the holes was the easy part....... The hard part is
screwing the attachment brackets into the steel bumper. Each light requires two
screws. Volvo has predrilled the attachment points for you, but the holes in my car were not tapped. The sheet metal screws provided will not fit nor self-tap!! (at least in my kit). I ended up searching through my hardware cabinet for alternatives and found some anodized self-tapping sheet metal screws and washers that would fit. The hard part is yet to come ---> you now have to turn the screws tight, and there is very little room to operate even the smallest socket wrench (hint: remove each turn signal light to get better visibility from the top - an easy job - spring clipped). Plan on using car ramps or jack to do this work from underneath. It's tedious and requires small hands. I finally got it done, but my socket wrench was ratcheting 1 click at a time! Also, on the right-hand side, the bottom of the washer fluid reservoir interferes some - I ended up cutting off a small piece of white plastic with the utility knife.
Don't be discouraged - it can be done - and it's not worth paying a dealer $150
if you have some mechanical skills and a few simple tools. But allow about 4
hours!!!
