I Opened One Up... 850 1995

That is di-electric grease, it is supposed to be there. My guess is the small particles of the copper contacts get shaved off, and make the current "jump" around a bit, causing some strange shifting issues (that's what my '93GLT was experiencing) and other electrical anomalies.

The cold must also have an effect, too, as many folks have troubles when the temperatures drop. FWIW, I recently replaced the PNP in my '96 855T. The car felt like it was stuck in "winter mode" when starting it up after work one day (cold & rainy). Moving the gear selector through it's full range about 25 times took care of the problem that day, but the PNP replacement should take care of it for a long while.
