Snow tires for XC V70-XC70

With an 03 XC on order and many years of snow tire use on my front wheel drive Volvos, I realize that things might be different with AWD. I live in hilly CT with a driveway to match, and all season tires on current FWD's do not do the job. Does AWD offer that much more traction that I can forget the snows?
