Front strut bushings or bearings. 850 1995

My front struts have developed a knocking noise so I looked under the hood and when I rocked the car, the shock ( strut) was moving up and down. Luckily there is a 2.5 inch round spacer that prevents the shock from going out the bushing mount. Are these things hard to change, as I plan on doing it myself.

I can get a good price on them, but I want to know if I have to remove the strut ass'y to change them, or can I just remove the strut nut up top, and jack up the car , and try and change it by manipulating the strut ass'y when there is a few inches of clearance above it, or am I dreaming ...
