I have to decide whether or not to make an offer on a 97 850 GLT with approx. 70,000 miles. Service records from last 20,000 miles (I don't have any records prior to that) don't indicate that the transmission fluid was ever changed. My mechanic (who is examining the car as we speak) said that he has advised people to not even buy a car that has very dirty ATF, as it can result in a very expensive repair (over $2,000).
After reviewing the archives, I understand that while Volvo doesn't specifically recommend ATF changes, most people on this board think ATF changes should be done every 30,000-50,000 miles.
My question: how much of a "deal-breaker" is it if the ATF on a 70,000 mile car hasn't been changed? Is it only a deal-breaker if the ATF is filthy, or would it also be a deal breaker if the AFT was "moderately dirty"? Finally, are there ways other than visually examining the ATF to determine what kind of shape the transmission is in?
(As a side-note: other aspects of this car look pretty decent, and the last owner diligently changed the oil every 3,000 miles.)
