NON WORKING SPEEDOMETER 94 850 850

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 1994 850 SEDAN WITH 130000 MILES.
THE MAN I BOUGHT IT FROM TOLD ME HE HAD DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY AND THEN PUT THE 2 CABLE ENDS TOGETHER TRYING TO TURN OFF THE SERVICE LIGHT.(NOT A VOLVO MAN) THE CARFAX INDICATES THAT THE MILES ARE ACCURATE.
NOW THE SPEEDOMETER IS DEAD. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON POSSIBLE CAUSES? FUSE PROBLEM? (I COULD BE SO LUCKY). THANKS
