Vapours up the dipstick 850 1997

Hi. My wife and I drive a 1997 850 with 280000 km. We have had the car dealer maintained since new and have only used synthetic oil. Recently, our car has been using about 1 liter of oil every 3000 km and I have noticed vapours coming up the dipstick. We have had the flame trap checked and the PCV system is working properly. The dealer suspects we need oil rings. Is this possible? ($3000 dollar job). The car runs great - no visible smoke coming out the back. What should we do??
