Will not Shift out of 1st. 850

Has anyone had the car not shift out of 1st when the car is cold? Someone said the shift point is higher when cold, but it really does not shift out of 1st. I took it a little past 3000 rpm and still no shift. I dont think it is a good Idea to drive the car that hard when it is cold. Any ideas?
