Rear Main Seal, What to do! 850 1995

I was told by my dealer today that my 850 Turbo needs a new rear main seal. Originally the dealer change the turbo return hose (gasket), but the leak was still there. I'm loosing about 1/2-1 ounce a day. The dealer quoted $1077. Being that it wasn't a couple hundred dollars, I called a local Volvo specialist shop. He informed me that he doesn't do rear main seals any more because it was too much of a pain and that sometimes the seal didn't sit right and he had to redo the job multiple times. He recommends that I go down to Pep Boys and buy some engine sealant. Does this sound crazy? Will it clog my hoses, turbo, or degrade other gaskets?

Thanx

I've always used synthetic and it's kind of a bummer for this to happen.
