Struts - Question

I am also contemplating replacing my struts on a 95 Volvo 850.

Probably a dumb question- but, do you remove the strut assembly and then use the spring compressor ? Or do you compress the strut spring with the assembly still in the car?

It appears to me the spring is compressed once the whole assembly has been removed from the car - just like to confirm this please.
