ball joints--dumb question?? 850 1995

You really can't tell visually if the ball joints are bad. I replaced both side4s on my 850 @ 165,000 miles. I kept hearing a rattling and thought the shocks were going, but that was not the case. It's not a hard job to do. The unfortunate thing on the 95's is that the entire control arm needs to be replaced, sonce the ball joint is part of it. Replace the sway bar connecting links too. All in all, the dealer wanted $1,200.00 for the job and I got the parts for $400.00 and about 6 hours later the car no longer rattles. good luck
