I'm not style averse....witness my ownership of Mac G4's! And my interest level in several cars include a couple that are seriously overstyled (G35, 350Z, etc), but on a platform for which reliability isn't a concern. Safety may be another factor.
I think Ford has done a very nice job in the exterior styling of many cars recently. The Taurus wagon is one of the best pieces of integrated styling I've seen, and still looks fresh even though it's probably a 7-year-old look. (The internals are another matter, though it is after all a volume production car.) The Focus is spectacular inside and out and has a quintessential European look about it and the SVT version probably rocks.
Which brings us to the Mustang. The current design is quite nice, and I particularly like the chiseled body and the smooth contrasting arc of the roofline. (Edmunds hates this, but what do they know?) The previous two generation Mustangs were a little bland, but they got it right this time. It looks substantial, masculine and sporty. Terrible ergonomics, though, and fuel performance is poor. (Have they thought about a longitudinal implementation of the T5 for this car? An RWD T5 would be awesome.)
So I can't wait to see what the new look is going to be.
I'd consider this American icon for my driveway if the ergonomics, fuel economy, and reliability were competitive with where I want to be for my next car. As it is, I get similar performance now from my S70T5 - plus greater comfort, handling and fuel economy. Unfortunately, my experience with the Fords I bought (new) in the 80's and early 90's and with my inlaws' Fords have left me feeling that great styling just puts a new mask on an underengineered, underachieving platform. (Hence my quibble with Volvo and styling....it's owned by an American car company, and in this environment style trumps substance every time. If it were owned by, say, BMW or Nissan, I wouldn't be so concerned about where Volvo is headed.)
