850 Towing Capacity? 850 1995

RE: towing weight capacity (not tongue weight) for my 1995 850 GLE wagon with a B5252S (10-valve 142hp) engine.

The owner's manual states a max Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) for the car of 4340 lb. It also specs the max trailer weight w/o brakes as 1540lb. Does the max trailer weight rating assume that the car itself could already be loaded to max GVW with passengers and cargo?

In other words, would I be within Volvo specs if I load the car up to the max GVW of 4340 lbs and then add a trailer weighing up to 1540 lbs?

If not, how do you calculate the correct towing weight capacity, taking into account the weight of the car, passengers, trailer and cargo?
