EGR preventative maintenace 850 1994

A couple of weeks ago I posted an "EGR low flow through system" fault code with corresponding "lambda sond" (check engine lamp) on. My independent mechanic suggested removing the valve and cleaning the hole where it attaches to the throttle body. It took one hours labor and some poking and cleaning of the hole to free up the 187,000km of crud that had accumlated in the last eight years. I purchased a throttle body gasket and valve gasket for re-assembly. My point is, if you ever get this code, your EGR valve is not failing, it simply has stopped working because of a clogged air flow. The mechanic sees this all the time with high mileage 850s. A dealership on the other hand would follow the troubleshooting guidelines set out by Volvo and probably would end up spending much more time (labor costs) and replacing the EGR valve...
