I just had the same CD changer installed in the trunk of my 97 850 GLT. I had Soundtrack install it, so they ordered the adapter themselves. Only after it was ordered did someone on this board tell me that you can get them cheaper from Crutchfield:

(I assume this is the adapter you're talking about. They have one for 1996-2000 Volvos and one for 95 and older.)
