CD changer question 850 1996

I bought the Alpine CD changer and adapter for my '95 850GLT with an SC-811 head unit. I just installed it yesterday and it didn't work. The CD changer, which I mounted in the trunk, is getting power but the head unit does not acknowledge the CD changer (i.e. when I push the CD button on the head unit nothing happens). I'm having a friend ring out the VOLALP peripheral adapter cord to see if it's good. Any ideas? I'm open for any suggestions.
