Intermittent failure to start 850 1994

Hi. My 850 turbo is having intermittent starting problems.
Couple days ago wouldn't restart after having been off for just a few minutes. After about 10 minutes started up and ran OK.
Today wouldn't restart after being off for about 2 hours. Wouldn't start 20 minutes later. After 45 minutes was able to start it by holding the accelerator to the floor while cranking (didn't try this until then).

Also "check engine" light has been on for a couple of weeks.

I do a lot of the less major work on my volvo's. Can anyone give me a hint on what to check?

Thanks!
Gary Chastine
