Air Conditioning Malfunction S70 2000

I have the same problem with my '98 S70. After a few minutes with the a/c switched on (or defrost), an internal vent senses that it should close which restricts the air-flow, causing the whirring sound you described. When the a/c is switched off, the air-flow almost immediately resumes. This has been going on for months but it didn't bother me until I went on a trip over the Holidays and kept having to switch the a/c off and on (yes, we're still using a/c in Dec. in FL). However, on the return trip, the a/c worked fine.
Any help would be appreciated since this may cost some big $$ to isolate the problem. I suppose it could be a simple thermostat problem or maybe the ECC unit needs to be replaced.
