850 vs 940 850

Funny you should ask. I've had my 850 turbo wagon for one year. It's been a very good car. Quick, safe, good looking. With the help of this board I've saved several hundred dollars in labor costs and diagnosing minor problems.

That said, I've just bought an '88 740 turbo wagon (very similar to a 940) and as soon as I have it home my 855t is up for sale. Why?

Obviously it wasn't for more power. The B230FT engine in the 740/940 turbo makes about as much power as the normally aspirated 850. I prefer rear wheel drive. I prefer the simplicity of the 4-banger turbo motor, I prefer not thinking anymore about automatic trasmission problems, (none yet for me as mine was replaced under warranty at 56,000 miles) as my "new" car has the bomb-proof M46 manual.

The 850, especially in turbo form, can be a harsh-riding but sure-footed platform. The 940 is known as a great, solid, highway flier. Also bigger and more comfortable.

Try them both and see what you think.

Bottom line for me is that as a stricktly DIY person, the older RWD platform is a dream, and insurance is much cheaper too. (At least in my case.) Also, for what my 855t will bring, my wife gets the 240/740/940 of her choice and there will be plenty of cash left over.

Good luck,
