Why does air pump run after car is warm? V70-XC70 1998

I have a 98 V70 R AWD. The air pump is very noisy (imminent demise, I know). But, the strange thing is that the air pump runs at times other than right after startup.

My understanding from all I've read is that the air pump is used to get the car into closed-loop operation sooner by permitting timing to run retarded due to more air in the system. However, I regularly experience the following: after a long run on the freeway, I'll get off at an exit and come to a stop. While waiting for the stoplight to change, the air pump will kick on. What's up with that?

Come to think of it, it will also do it after city driving to my son's daycare, right after I pull into the parking space.

Any explanation? Is there possibly another part/sensor that's failing that could be causing the Motronic to run the air pump to compensate?

Thanks!
